Iwájú Is the First Disney Animation Collaboration With an Outside Studio in 100 Years

Disney Animation Studios has announced its first collaboration with an outside studio in 100 years, as well as its first original series: Iwájú.

Revealed at D23, Iwájú is a “love letter to Nigeria” and is made in collaboration with Kugali Media. It’s set in a futuristic version of Lagos, and follows a wealthy heiress and a poor boy named Tola, who is described as stubborn, eager, and charismatic. Tola teams up with a questionable ally, Otin, over the course of the story.

The series is currently deep in animation production and is expected sometime in 2023. A clip was shown at D23, but unfortunately Disney hasn’t made it more widely available.
