Karl Urban is reportedly in final talks to join the cast of the highly anticipated sequel to New Line’s 2021 blockbuster film Mortal Kombat. The Wrap was first to report that Urban is being considered to play Johnny Cage.

The sequel, which will be directed by Simon McQuoid and written by Jeremy Slater, will be produced by Atomic Monster’s James Wan, Broken Road Production’s Todd Garner, Simon McQuoid, and E. Bennett Walsh. Karl Urban, who is currently starring in Amazon’s hit series The Boys, is no stranger to blockbuster films, having appeared in Thor: Ragnarok, Star Trek, and The Lord of the Rings.

Released in April 2021, the first Mortal Kombat film was a violent and gritty adaptation of the popular video game series created by Ed Boon and John Tobias. Since its debut, the movie has been one of the top feature titles on HBO Max, garnering a massive audience. The post-credits scene of the original movie teased the inclusion of Johnny Cage in the upcoming sequel.

In the Mortal Kombat universe, Johnny Cage is an action movie star with a martial arts background. He is one of the primary heroes defending Earthrealm from various threats, known for his signature moves and fatalities. Cage is often portrayed as a Hollywood fighting movie star who values his image and behaves in a cool manner.

Further updates are expected to provide more information about the plot and release date of the Mortal Kombat sequel.
