Why The Last Of Us Star Nick Offerman Will Never Play Video Games Again

Nick Offerman, who starred in the latest episode of HBO’s The Last of Us, no longer plays video games because he’s worried he would get too far sucked in and would never leave his basement.

Appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Offerman–who played Bill in the newest episode–said he lost a few weeks of his life to Banjo-Kazooie decades ago, and he doesn’t want to do that again.

“About 25 years ago, I played my last video game. I am very indulgent. I lost a couple of weeks to a video game called Banjo-Kazooie. Two weeks went by. The slow dopamine drip is so delicious. Then it’s over, and you’re like, ‘Yes, I won!’ And immediately I am like, ‘What have I done with my life?’ So I decided I am never going to do that again.”

Offerman said games like The Last of Us have “gotten so good” that he worries he’d “be in a basement and wouldn’t even be going to audition for shows like this.”

Also in the interview, Offerman said he originally wasn’t going to take the offer to play Bill on The Last of Us, due to scheduling issues, but his wife Megan Mullally, convinced him to make it happen. Offerman wasn’t even originally supposed to play Bill, as he only came aboard after the original actor–Con O’Neil–had to drop out due to a scheduling conflict.

The latest episode of The Last of Us also featured Murray Bartlett (The White Lotus) as Frank. The episode’s plot was biggest deviation from the game so far. For more on the episode, check out GameSpot’s breakdown, which contains massive spoilers.
